E.R. Educated Rapper's Biography
Growing up in London, my dad used to drink heavily and would become violent when my mother confronted him about it. My mother was frustrated and expressed her anger as well. I escaped this morbid existence through education. I read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, which helped me endure my latchkey kid experience. I became a walking Webster Dictionary. Later on labeling myself, "The Educated Rapper" made sense.
We migrated to the U.S in the 80's from London via Guyana. I lived in Guyana, with my father's sister for three years. She was mean to me for three solid years till I stood up to her ass. Finally my pops came to get me and brought me to Brooklyn here in the U.S. There I heard the early traces of hip-hop for the first time.
Although, I was a loner I caught on to the street game and learned how to carry myself around the wolves and the pit bulls. Once my dad lunged at my turntables with a hammer threatening to smash it into pieces because I practiced relentlessly everyday. I still do. My mother accused me of listening to shit music, but little did she know hip-hop would become a multi-billion dollar empire.
While pursuing a bachelor's degree at City College in Engineering I rounded up a couple of cats after learning how to master my flow. Two of them were dancers making the transition to rap so I became a major writer in camp along with a DJ. We signed an independent deal with Select Records. I co-wrote and was lead rapper-on the Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Hall of Fame mega hit song, "Roxanne Roxanne." We were inducted into their encyclopedia. There were more than 35 answer back responses to "Roxanne Roxanne."
We recorded five albums attracting fans nationally and internationally. I still get e-mails from Canada, Africa, Europe, Japan and the West Indies. When the group disbanded in 1992 Ms. George the parent of our former producers, Full Force expressed emphatically that I should never give up rapping and I heeded her advice. Synchronicity plays a part in what happens in the Universe and this opened up the door for my new freedom and beginning.
On September 11, 2001 I arrived at the One World Trade Center on the 24th floor around 8:10am. Just minutes after getting there, workers started running out of their offices. No fire alarm was sounded so I had no idea what the panic was about. I looked across at Tower Two and a chunk of the building was missing and a fire was raging. We were instructed to stay still and calm, but I hauled ass out of there like any intelligent person would.
The foundation started to shake. While leaving the building, glass, cement and dust rained down as we were escorted out by the fire department. Once I made it to the street the second plane struck. At first I had no idea it was a terrorist attack I thought it was just a fire. Not long after that people started jumping to their death from a hundred floors up. Body parts were splattered everywhere. I admire their courage because those people saw no other way out of that tragedy. That day was like scenes from a movie, but the horror that took place was real. My condolences goes out to the families who lost loved ones, the Fire Fighters , New York City police and Port Authority officers who sacrificed their lives. I couldn't fly for a while at first because the threat of terrorism was on my mind like everyone else.
Understandably, I fell back from the industry for a while. It was during my trips back and forth to London that I met Ulysee Carson. I hooked up with Ulysee through a vocalist we were working with. As a result of our conversations over a three-year period I was transformed from an "Educated Rapper" to an "Educated businessman." He laid out a Raw blueprint of the music game that you wont find in books from his years working for Sony dealing with many of the industry's power players
I went back to pursue a double major in Communication/Journalism and Writing while keeping my ear to the streets. I learned from Mr. Carson that in order get in where I fit in I had to lose my Old school ears. Most of the cats can't make the transition, because their mind and ears are old. They can't listen to hip-hop without bringing what they were conditioned to accept. I'm a rap fanatic. I listen to current hip-hop and feed on every form of hip-hop media. If I'm not combing the Internet, I'm devouring the Billboard as well as all of the hip-hop publications, radio, BET, you name it, I'm knee deep in it. I never stopped writing and I approach today's music with a completely open-mind, which I learned from Union Avenue Entertainment.
I grew up on the Pioneers, but acknowledge the works of Biggie Smalls, Jay Z, Tupac, Eminem, Missy, Twista and all other heavy hitters. My works inspired Keith Murray, Treach (Naughty by Nature), Chubb Rock, Ludicrous, Lil Kim (who stated I was the best rapper in my former group). Ludicrous states Roxanne was the first record his parents bought him. Camron bumped into our DJ and showed much love and respect. Missy paid homage to my style on her 2004 album in a song entitled," Funky Fresh Dressed Ready To Party". The song Roxanne has been remixed and sampled my Mack 10, Wyclef, and Sean Puffy Combs and featured on The Wayans Brothers.
During one of my trips to California I bumped into Brandy at a club called the Dragonfly and immediately took to her energy. I reached out to Ulysee Carson and forwarded some material on her. The rest will be history. To the Hip Hop world, If anyone thought I was a prodigious spitter before, I won't pontificate for these mix-tape followers I'll hit them with my 2005 verbosity.
